Hair is made up of 90% keratin, an extremely strong protein which is a major component in the hair, skin and nails. Keratins in the hair have large amounts of the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine, it combines to form disulfide bridges that confer additional strength and rigidity by permanent, thermally-stable cross linking. These strong bonds are flexible yet tough.
